Just the other day, in the middle of a week where I’ve started exploring my own fears, my mom shared with me a Facebook interview with Oprah. In the interview, Oprah mentions she’d never felt fear before. Ever. Not a day in her life. According to Oprah, the very first time she felt the pangs of fear was when she decided to move on from her show and create her own network. As she felt the fear, she thought, That’s what that’s like?
Fascinating, right? How could someone go through life without ever being afraid? Without ever feeling fear?
Then she posed the question, “What would you do if you were not afraid?”
Really, what would you do? It’s definitely an interesting question. Would you stand proud before your audience and deliver your message? Leave that 9-5 lifestyle you’ve been hanging onto, and pursue your true passion? Write that book you’ve always wanted to write?
Things suddenly become so easy when fear is eliminated from the equation, don’t they? So what did Oprah do next? She took herself through the mental exercise, Pretend that you’re not afraid.
I guess what it all comes down to is…what do we really want?
I really do believe that the reason Oprah went through life without feeling any fear has not so much to do with fear itself as much as following her own true vision. When you’re perfectly aligned with your passions and your talents, and your message, fear becomes unimportant.
“Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgment that something is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever but the cautious do not live at all.”
~Ambrose Redmoon
Oprah wasn’t cautious, she went for it. Because she knew she a had one life to live, and she wanted to live it in a great way. She wanted it more than fear, so much so that for years she never even felt fear. How would you like to live a life like that?
What would you do, if you weren’t afraid?
